Pharmaceutical Care Referent (h/f/x) – MSF Belgium

CONTEXT  

The medical department of MSF Belgium (OCB - Operational Center Brussels) plays a strategic role by defining the modalities of implementation of MSF’s medical strategy so that both coherence and quality can be safeguarded. Strategic support is given along the phases of the project cycle. It has a normative role and technical support function regarding implementation and follow-up of the projects. The medical department (MED) ensures knowledge transfer to the medical workforce and stimulates research and innovation by challenging current medical practices and scanning of new approaches.  

It is composed of multiple specialists based across a network of units worldwide (Belgium, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Lebanon, Luxembourg, and South Africa) and works in close collaboration with operations, other OCB departments and MSF movement. We are also supporting the projects of MSF Western & Central Africa (WaCa).  

As the pharmaceutical care referent, you play a key role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of the medication management process within a healthcare facility. This position is also focused on Antimicrobial Resistance and Good Pharmacy Practice in End User Unit. 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. Safeguard the quality of patient medication management
  • Define the minimum pharmaceutical care knowledge required for project pharmacy teams
  • Identify and prioritize tasks essential for patient medication management
  • Map existing OCB pharmaceutical documentation and identify gaps
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive training package adapted to the different pharma profile (Pharma Coordinator, Pharma officer of the project and Project Pharma Manager)
  • Create and update instructions, SOPs, templates, briefing package and checklists to standardize pharmacy practice
  • Conduct project visits to assess compliance and provide support
  1. Reduce medication-related risks and prevent errors
  • Promote best practices through documentation, guidance, and targeted training
  • Support teams in implementing risk-reduction strategies and monitoring compliance
  1. Act as OCB focal point for Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) and clinical pharmacy
  • Serve as focal point for all GPP-related questions in end-user pharmacies
  • Ensure alignment with OCB standards and organizational policies 
  • With the support of the Operational Pharmacist MIOs, to provide support to ensure proper management of medical products at end-user unit level with regards to the key aspects of Good Pharmacy Practice as reflected in the OCB policy and protocol for GPP in end-user pharmacies 

  1. Support the Drug Management Pharmacist by providing guidance on Antimicrobial Stewardship
  • Advise on rational use of antimicrobials and support implementation of stewardship programs
  • In collaboration with the OCB antimicrobial referent guide medical teams to monitor and optimize antimicrobial prescribing
  • According to the needs identified by drug management pharmacist, develop a comprehensive training packages and create instructions, SOPs, templates, and checklists
  • Participate in the AMR circle
  1. Pharma HR, Briefings and trainings
  • To provide training of staff (e.g. HMTT “Hospital Management Team Training” and FLMT “first line medical training”), and ensure knowledge transfer on new policies, protocols, guidelines, etc. including intersectional trainings
  1. Participation in the Medical Department activities and meetings
  • To give expert advice and technical support to colleagues in the department and to other departments on inter-disciplinary issues regarding Pharmacy
  • To participate in all meetings of the Medical Department, Pharma Unit and also in the Coordinator Week and Annual Review of Operations when requested
  1. Intersectional work 
  • To represent the OCB Pharma Unit on relevant intersectional platforms related to the core responsibilities of this position. E.g. any group related to GPP, such as the intersectional contact group for improving Quality of Care in Dispensing 

 

REQUIREMENTS 

Education & Experience 

  • Pharmacy degree (or equivalent depending on the pharmacist’s country of origin) 

  • Minimum 1 year of MSF experience as a pharmacist in the projects  

  • Experience in hospital pharmacy 

  • Experience as a clinical pharmacist is an asset

CONDITIONS 

  • Expected starting date: April 1st, 2026 

  • Location*: Brussels or other location/s where there is an MSF entity could be exceptionally discussed.  

*The final outcome depends on the residency of the candidate, the local legal limitations (residency, work permit, etc.) and on the agreement with the hosting MSF entity of these locations   

  • Contract type: 6 months contract – part-time between 40 to 60% 

  • The contractual terms, conditions and salary will be established according to the place of work and in respect of MSF standard function and salary grids
